NameLanguages of Southern New Guinea: Coconut Interviews
DescriptionFrom cathedrals to dreaming sites, every culture needs its monuments. But the landscape and built culture of southern New Guinea conspire to erase physical memory. In the ever-changing environment of mud, plants, and water, there are no rock formations to serve as durable traces of the past. Wooden houses decay within a decade or two. Garden clearings grow back after a few years. The savannah edge, if not maintained by regular bushfires, is soon recolonized by forest. Against this mutable environment, stability of external memory is given by the coconut trees planted anywhere a plant can grow: beaches, swiddens, old villages, house yards. Almost every coconut palm serves as a tab (sign)—a reminder of stories of garden clearings, resettlements, disputes, pledges, or intentions. For most, there are individuals with the special knowledge needed to tell their stories. These trees form an arboreal history anchored in their durability and in the clear symbolic and practical intentions that accompany each planting. In this paper, I illustrate the trees' mnemonic value, drawing on hundreds of interviews conducted by local interviewers in their own languages—Nen, Nmbo, and Idi. Responding to the flexible interactions between each interviewer and interviewee, they cover many topics, from memories of old gardens, abandoned houses, or temporary periods in other villages, through reconciliations, to girl-abducting teenagers and midlife contraceptives. In presenting this corpus of material, I marry linguistic and anthropological analyses to show how a network of communities, linked by marriage and exchange across language boundaries, uses these living monuments to maintain its histories across a broad range of spokespeople. Results from these recordings have been written up in the following article: Evans, Nicholas. "One Thousand and One Coconuts: Growing Memories in Southern New Guinea." The Contemporary Pacific, vol. 32 no. 1, 2020, p. 72-96. Project MUSE, doi:10.1353/cp.2020.0004.

Description

Coconut site: Back of Joshua's yard. GPS location: 8 62715 S, 142 05134 E. Interviewer: Joshua (Wenembu) In counting children, she went down to her big toe (right foot?) for the last one - 11th?. At some point she is asked about a date, doesn't know the answer, and a person nearby writes it on the ground (photographed), which Joshua (Wenembu) then voices. Also at one point she mentions Suki and points SE (southeast) - this is metonymic, pointing to where the pastors live who were trained in Suki; Suki itself lies to the NW (northwest). This is a short interview made by the Erbowag subcommittee of the Nen language committee, under Nick Evans' supervision. The Erbowag subcommittee comprises Minung (Qbr) Blba, Doa Teräb, Joshua (Wenembu), and Grmbo Blba (a further female member, Kandr Sobae, will join the second recording session for gender balance). Description

Coconut site: In Kandr Sobae's garden place, past the airsrip. GPS location: 8 61932 S, 142 05240 E. Interviewer: Grmbo Blba Very nice interview, concludes with brief discussion of the circumstances of Kandr's exchange (i.e., she was a karata trp, given in exchange by her father for his wife since he had no sister). Kandr's mother was a Bug clan woman, who usually lived at Sombrae. There is an old woman Kandr (her maternal grandmother, Ywal's mother) living in Yblämnd. This is a short interview made by the Erbowag subcommittee of the Nen language committee, under Nick Evans' supervision. Description

General interview in the old quarter of Tubegu, which was a sort of mini-village just north of the creek on the Mär road, where people lived after the village moved to Bimadbn. Interesting for the way she points to a whole range of coconut trees showing where various people lived at the time, and also for her account of her house burning down. Very lively and engaged. GPS location: 8 62559 S, 142 05455 E. Interviewer: Grmbo Blba. Video recordist: Nicholas Evans. Coconut site: In large grove of bamboos along bush track from Kokottkape. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 60533 S, 142 03718 E. In the end there is an interesting question where Jimmy asks Geroma what was there before these coconuts were planted, samba or wrng, which shows the original etymological meaning of samba as 'cleared place'. Interviewer: Jimmy Nébni. Video recordist: Sambo (but she kept letting the viewfinder sink low so some heads will be chopped off). Coconut site: In old village of Ki. Very interesting example of a coconut planted as a part of a tab, as reconsiliation for a dispute involving sorcery accusations. A type of plant called saragao was planted along with the coconut (this is seen in the video) and is supposed to help heal the dispute; near the end of the video Drondro shows how the saragao would be twisted and chewed then spat onto the chests of the parties being reconciled. Description

Coconut site: Planting of new coconut in Nick Evans' yard (in the direction of their village of Derideri) by Qanama as part of the equivalent of a tab zi to express a wish that a linguist come and document their language. Nambo language responses, interview questions in Nen. Interesting for its real depiction of the sorts of appeals and incantations that accompany the planting of a coconut. Concludes by asking his sister Prnda, resident in Bimadbn, to look after and water the coconut so that it will grow, and uses the metaphor of the coconut growing slowly and eventually bearing fruit to implant the idea of a long-term dictionary project. Despite Qanama's expressed concern for the purity of Nambo, he frequently mixes in Nama to his speech and the other men with him frequently prompt or correct him to a 'purer' usage. Following Qanama, both WIlliam and Prnda make shorter addresses, also in Nambo. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 62985 S, 142 05069 E. Interviewer: Jimmy Nébni. Video recordist: Daniel Gubae then Nick Evans. This is a short interview made by the Kiembtuwirer subcommittee of the Nen language committee, under Nick Evans' supervision. The Kiembtuwirer subcommittee comprises Warapa Wlila, Sarao, Rusien Aniba, and Fasawar. Jimmy Nébni was also present. This is a specific interview about coconut tree. Description

Coconut site: Coconut tree next to Bare's house. First in Nen, then in Nambu, though the two languages aren't kept clearly apart and get mixed up during the interviews (drawing critical comments from those present that they are 'spoiling the language'). GPS location of coconut tree: 8 63117 S, 140 05081 E. Interviewer: Rusien. Video recordist: Fasawr. People present: Fasawr, Rusien, Jimmy Nébni, Michael Binzawa, Warapa. Because Eri Kashima and some member of the Nmbu language committee were visiting, as well as four speakers of Nambo, the opportunity was taken to record extra material on these language, deviating from the regular schedule. Description

Coconut site: In yard of elementary school. The GPS reading is taken on one of a group of four coconuts which G̅anio planted together in the school yard (photo illustrates all four). Fasawr only switched her sound recorder on halfway through, so need to use Tano's whole version. Poor interviewing by Fasawr. First in Nmbu, then in Nen. Short supplementary recording by Nick Evans adds information about how she chopped down some old copra coconut trees which old people had planted but which the village does not use, to plant coconuts for local consumption instead. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 63084 S, 142 05098 E. Interviewer: Fasawr. Video recordist: Michael, further recording by Tano. Description

Coconut site: In back of house. The coconut Aosa Yun talked about were too far for her to walk to, a bit to the east, so she is sitting at the foot of another coconut. Interview is a bit quiet but OK as a representation of old women's speech. Mostly in Nmbo (Q and A), her mother tongue, since she says she has forgotten how to speak Nen, except for swear words. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 62845 S, 142 05144 E. Interviewer: Jimmy Nébni. Video recordist: Mary. This is a short interview made by the Seregu subcommittee of the Nen language committee, under Nick Evans' supervision. People present: Goi Dibod, Mary Dibod, Zerus Kaeko, Amto, Srgo, Angae, Jimmy Nébni (MB absent). In addition to various standard interviews, two opportunistic recordings were made: some basic words and phrases in Bituri (filed in separate folder 'Bituri'), from Sibia Penak from Upiara - enough to show its related ness to Marind, cf, anema 'man', anuma 'woman', anima 'people'; masiga anema 'good man', masigu anuma 'good woman', masimsi anima 'good people', also agreement on verb: naraterena 'he is speaking', nara turena 'she is speaking', nara tiremana 'they are speaking'. Plus a sound recording from Goi about the plant wawr and its use in making spinning tops.

Coconut site: L2 Nen speaker, who learned it from his mom and also his wife, but speaks very fluently (I couldn't detect anything non-standard). This coconut was planted as a mark commemorating a death and introducing a taboo during the grieving period, payar wirrs yam, which lasted 2 years. Question several people ask: ebe kr bä ym prede, bm oag? (Note: says ämbs pus for number of children; hum in background from Digicel tower nearby). GPS location of coconut tree: 8 61279 S, 141 92156 E. Interviewer: Jimmy Nébni. Video recordist: Grmbo (unfortunately this failed to record). This is recorded during the second visit to Gubam. Description

Coconut site: Wagra Karwai (Carua), an Äkämär man who lives in Gubam as part of a Karata trip arrangement, in his yard. Bebek (Yosang's baba) joins in to explain in a mixture of Nen and Nambu (though others try shutting him up), then Gima, then Bebek again. Interesting life story, including reading from Motu Bible and talking about learning Motu as a young man working on rubber plantations elsewhere which is where he learned Motu. At the end his wife is asked how she feels about having stayed in her own village and talks in Nambu. Wagra comes from the Qandara clan, which his son belongs to (in swamp area near Mär). GPS location of coconut tree: 8 61337 S, 141 92078 E. This is recorded during the second visit to Gubam. Coconut site: Coconut in old village of Ki, planted by Wendy's Father. Interview first in Nen, then Idi. Goi commented on how few Seregu ladies have planted coconuts - 'why are they relying on us men?'. Wawr: 3 photos taken, one with Goi's daughter, made into a spinning toy by inserting a thin stick through it. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 6293 S, 142 05223 E. Interviewer: Jimmy Nébni. Video recordist: Zerus Kaeko (ran out of battery halfway through).

Coconut site: About coconut tree planted in colonial days - interesting as a history of colonial times. Thompson, a patro. officer based in Morehead, shot a dog near here with his rifle, 'in colonial times they didn't want dogs to come around', he was rude and did it in a public square. There was a resthouse just to the south of the coconut tree; that's where they were living. GPS location of coconut tree: 8 63060 S, 142 05208 E. Interviewer: Daniel Gubae. Description

Because Yayam comes from Bebdeben, the opportunity was taken to interview her with her countrymen present, getting her to tell the story of how her son captured a young wild pig for them to raise. Interviewed by Tano. Very lively interview and story, first in Nambu, then in Nen. Video recordist: Jimmy Nébni. Interview in front of their pig pen. During (initial) Nambu version, she occasionally lapsed into Nen but each time was urged to stick to Nambu by the audience. Intersting because of the way she has quite different relisations of questions vs kw as between Nen and Nambu. Also lots of interesting questions and answers about pigs.

Description

This is a series of training sessions made by the Seregu subcommittee of the Nen language committee, under Nick Evans' supervision. The Seregu subcommittee comprises Goi Dibod, Mary Dibod, Zerus Kaeko; Doreen Wenembu is also a member but was absent on 20140926 and was replaced by Songa Dibod and his wife Srgo. Jimmy Nébni was also present (also joined for part of it by Daniel Gubae). The files are from training sessions where each was learning how to operate the recording equipment and carry out the interviews. The videos are very chaotic and only included because there is some relevant background conversation and joking. The practice interviews were only recorded on the Zoom sound recorder. The most interesting pair are those between Goi and his sister-in-law Srgo. When Goi interviews Srgo he uses Nen and she answers in Idi (first version), then there is a second version, a rerun, where she answers in Nen. Then the tables are turned and she asks him questions in Idi and he responds in Nen. N.B. The audio recordings and video recordings do not align. Audio recordings: LSNG14-TrainingSession_Seregu_1-01.wav: Mary by Zerus. LSNG14-TrainingSession_Seregu_1-02.wav: Songa by Goi. LSNG14-TrainingSession_Seregu_1-03.wav: Srgo by Jimmy - Idi.
