Description

Gulirri (Gulerre in these files) is a place on Marrangu land close to Ramingining. As part of a film project in 2015 Marrangu people staged a performance of the Wurrkiganydjarr song repertoire at Gilirri. This performance was both audio recorded and filmed. The item includes 'raw' audio files and compiled video, which compiles video footage and separate audio. There is one long compile which contains the whole performance and a number of shorter clips which are parts of the performance devoted to particular topics. The item also includes an interview with Wurrkigandjarr senior owner Jimmy Djamanba and contributions from other performers. Each video file has credits. There is also an interview about a site associated with bortok, the spangled grunter, featuring Gary Madjibarrili Smith, a Marrangu man. There are a number of MTS clips which were filmed by Aung Si during the same session. There are annotation files for some of the video compiles, these are in progress (23/5/2018).

Description

This item comprises four original video recordings with annotation files. Stanley Djalarra Rankin tells two stories - one is about the travels of Miwal, a Marrangu spirit being. The other is a story about the moon, which is owned by the Murrungun group. Stanley has custodial rights to this story through his mother's mother. There are also two separate edited compiles that draw from these 4 original files - speech has been segmented but no transcription. Each of the edit files has a matching audio extract file (wav) and an annotation file also - these were created in order to work through the best parts of the recordings and have had more work and so contain partial transcription. These annotations are in progress as of April 2018.

Description

This item comprises four edited compiles and matching audio exports of video recordings made at Galawdjapin and Garttji on 7 October 2015with Gary Madjibarrili Smith, Ad Djulipirri, Craig Elliott, Aung Si and Margaret Carew. We walk around both sites and Ad and Gary explain some cultural matters. This includes a men-only visit to Bunyundjarrkawuritjin. Gary talks about the encounter history of Garttji, involving the killing of Djinang and Wurlaki people and the theft of body parts. There is a hollow log at Garttji left from a repatriation ceremony a few years prior to our visit and Gary and Ad discuss the designs on this. The key motif is djanambal 'freshwater catfish', which is a regional Yirritjingi moiety emblem and song topic. Both low res mp4s and master quicktime files are provided. There are also annotation files for these edits. Also refer to item called: 2015_Marrangu_session_notes.

Description

These recordings were made with Murrungun elder Margaret Rinybuma (MR) and Mapi clan member Eric Pascoe (EP) in Maningrida on 23/NOV/2017, with Margaret Carew (MC) and Isobel O'Keefe (IOK). MC and IOK each recorded on separate devices and a synched audio file (20171123sync-01.wav) is provided along with the separate source files 20171123IO-01.WAV & 20171123MC-01.wav. There is an annotation file that matches the synced file. We discuss various animals and plants. They are specifically labelled as Wurlaki as MR explicitly aims to teach EP the Wurlaki terms (in the contemporary Maningrida context, the local group use Wurlaki as a label for the various Yirritjingi dialects, the language spoken by members of Mapi, Burlkpurlk, Djarriwitjibi and Djalawurwur clan groups, possibly others). Djinang / Wurlaki and English.

Description

Recordings made by anthropologist Craig Elliott who lived at Galawdjapin and Garttji in the late 1980s. Item includes photographs of original tape. Tape notes say: Joe Goidarri [Gidarri] monologue of Bulman Journey. Margaret Carew has created an eaf annotation file and segmented the speech. Gidarri's monlogue goes for about 50 minutes. There is at least one other speaker present (apart from Elliott) and this consociate backchannels, asks some questions and suggests some recount topics. The recording begins as a travelling narrative, recounting travel and listing many place names along the route to Bulman. The speaker then recounts hunting experiences involving buffalo shooting and catching other game including goannas and fish. Transcription is in progress (23 April 2018). The narrative is noteworthy for the rich use of ideophones to represent impacts and other actions as part of recounting spearing and shooting animals.

Description

There are 9 video files included in this deposit. They were recorded by Margaret Carew at Gochan Jiny-jirra outstation (also called Cadell), in May 2018. The performances were associated with a funeral for Mick Marrawa England of the An-nguliny clan, along with a second funeral held simultaneously for a baby. Mick's brother Allen Milyerr England led the performance of the ganyjal 'eel tailed catfish' manikay which involved a procession of dancers. There was also a performance of Ana-gujalala manikay led by Steven Dennis with lead dancers Gahwun and Blake Carter. There is a recording of an action dance performed by young women to prerecorded music. The singer on the prerecorded track is Allen Milyerr England. We stopped filming of the final part of the ceremony at the family's request.

Description

These films were produced by Margaret Carew/Batchelor Institute in partnership with Bábbarra Women's Centre in Maningrida. English translations by Murray Garde. Some films are subtitled, others not. 2017 films - these films show women from the Babbarra women's centre with their artworks and discussion about them. The women speak mainly in Kuninjku or Kune (dialects of Bininj Kunwok), & Burarra, with some English. The films are compiled from video and audio files recorded at Bábbarra Women's Centre in Maningrida along with some on-country footage taken on a day trip to Mumeka crossing. The women's centre footage is primarily interviews with additional shots of women working on fabric printing. There is a longer set of shots of Deborah Wurrkkidj collecting pandanus and talking about her country. There is a filmed and audio recorded interview with Janet Marawarr in which she discusses her kunkurra 'whirlywind' fabric design. There are eafs with some of these files, linked to audio exports of the video. These log the content by topic only with a couple of exceptions. 2018 films - these were mainly about Ngaldjolhbo, a spirit woman told by Janet Marawarr and Lennie Goya-airra. There is a film about yawkyawk 'mermaid spirits' and some discussion about Babbarra exhibitions and events.
