The hermit crab tells the barracuda that it can go faster, and when the barracuda is disbelieving, the hermit crab challenges it to a race around the circumference of the island. The hermit crab posts its friends around the island, so that as the barracuda swims around, each time it looks to the shore, there is a hermit crab, up ahead. The hermit crab just stays at the starting point, and when the barracuda finally gets back to that point, it is exhausted and dies on the sand. So M̄atēk looked after and buried them alone. (Not transcribed) -- 9B FRN Freda Lona Malau Vētuboso Traditional story about a swamphen and a rat who went together to eat Malay apples. They argued about who should climb the tree and in the end the rat climbed. When it was up the tree the swamphen took a needle from a she-oak and stuck it in the rat's bottom as a tail. The rat then refused to throw down any fruit for the Swamphen to eat. It then threw down a very ripe red apple which landed on its head to make its beak and frontal shield red. (Variation of GGM.) -- 9B WNW Walter Lekēl Vētuboso -- (Wutrōw) Traditional story about a mother and daughter who go to the sea and catch a huge octopus. They kill it and take it home to bake it. The mother leaves the child to look after it while she goes to the garden to get some heliconia leaves to wrap the octopus in. While she is gone, the octopus comes to life and sings to the child that she is going to eat the two of them. When her mother returns they prepare to bake the octopus, but as they are about to put it in the stone oven, it grabs the mother and puts her in in its place. It tries to get the child too, but she runs away. The two never saw each other, but were locked in their houses, until one day, when Wōwut was practising shooting, he shot an arrow outside and M̄eter saw him. Another girl also saw him and convinced him to let her go with him. The parents got upset and sent for M̄eter, and they all went to work in the garden together. M̄eter felt rejected and while they were working she ran down to the sea and drowned herself. Wōwut tried to stop her but she wouldn't listen so he went home and hung himself, leaving his parents and the young woman. -- 10B BNR Brenden Malau Vētuboso (Laln̄evut) Traditional story about a rat and a hermit crab who go and collect sea almonds. The rat finishes its share first and keeps asking for more from the hermit crab until it finally refuses. The husband returns and looks for Ragargarsiler, but she goes back into the sea and turns back into a fish. She took him home, gave him food, and wouldn't let him take any to his younger brother. When they finally went to see him, it was too late, he died, and Mōlgon jumped in the water and drowned himself. Description
Traditional story about two brothers called Qatgarẽ and Esdagarẽ who go shooting together. Unbeknownst to Qatgarẽ; his younger brother dies and he goes shooting with his spirit. When Esdagarẽ cooked his fish it remained raw, so Qatgarẽ realised that he was a ghost. The ghost invited the Qatgarẽ to dance with the other ghosts and showed him how to trick them that he was a ghost too. They could smell that he wasn't a ghost but he managed to trick them. When they finally realised, they chased him, but he just managed to get away. (Variation of JTF on item CH1-200202-A.)

Traditional story about twin brothers, Mõlio & Marinõ. Their parents died and they lived with their grandmother. One day they went fishing for flying fish and left their grandmother. They buried her in a hole in the house so that if a devil came it wouldn't find her. They told her that if a devil came to steal their chickens, then she should just stay quietly. She disobeyed and shouted at the devil when it came stealing the chickens. The devil tried to dig her out of the hole, but she sang a song to her grandchildren who heard and came racing back, just in time to save her. They shoot the devil and have fish for dinner.

It wouldn't tell the dog why it was laughing, so the dog chased it up a tree. It couldn't climb up after it so it pretended to be dead. The dog cat an ant, then a fire ant to bite it, to see if it was really dead. They reported that it was, so the cat climbed down, but then the dog chased after it, caught it and bit it to death.

Traditional story about a swamphen and a rat who went together to eat Malay apples. They argued about who should climb the tree and in the end the rat climbed. Before the rat threw fruit down to the swamphen, first it would shit and urinate in it. Then it threw down a very ripe red apple which landed on the swamphen's head to make its beak and frontal shield red. When the rat was climbing down, the swamphen took a Cordyline leaf and stuck it in the rat's bottom as a tail. (Variation of item CH1-200209-BFRN.)
