Description
[This item is not held by PARADISEC but is referenced to allow it to be located in language-based searches, the actual location is provided in the URL]
This collaborative project involved the University of Oxford and two universities in Papua, Universitas Cenderawasih and Universitas Negeri Papua, in the creation of an on-line database of digital audio texts and their linguistically annotated transcriptions and translations for the Austronesian language Biak, a language with about 50,000-70,000 speakers in Papua. The annotated transcriptions are produced using Toolbox, a freely-available data management and analysis tool for language documentation, which supports the creation of resources in various forms: transcribed texts with free translations into Indonesian and English (of most use to the Biak-speaking community and for pedagogical use in Papua) and linguistically annotated transcriptions in two forms: a standard human-readable form like the paper-based corpora familiar to linguists, and a translation of this form to XML via the utility tools for Toolbox, suitable for computer analysis and database search. These resources provide a snapshot of audio and textual data on the language, and are useful for language preservation efforts, for ongoing efforts to produce teaching materials in the indigenous languages of Papua, and as a basis for the creation of dictionaries and glossaries in the language. Since they are linguistically annotated, they are also useful for linguists conducting research on Biak and related Austronesian languages. We are grateful to the ESRC for providing support for this project. The project ran from October 2009 to September 2010.

Description
[J. Stanley Gardiner, a naturalist, visited Rotuma for 3 1/2 months in 1896. He was a keen observer and conducted extensive interviews on a range of topics. His account, published in 1898 in the Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute 27:396-435, 457-524, is the most comprehensive ethnography of Rotuma published in the nineteenth century. It is an indispensable source for studies of Rotuman culture and history.] See also AC2-OLVOC206 which is Arthur Capell's vocab extracted from Gardiner's work.

Description
The published grammar of the language and primary files (Toolbox format). "My aim in the preparation of this volume was not to write a full grammar of the language, but to make the older German materials for Titan more accessible. I have written a sketch based on the texts but since I did not conduct fieldwork with native speakers and I have no firsthand knowledge of the language, this volume should not be seen in any way as a definitive study of Titan. Rather, I hope that it will serve as the basis for further study of the language, and as a source of comparative data. A synthesis of all extant materials needs to be done in consultation with native speakers of the language." October 2018: Files submitted to PARADISEC and now available as collection CB4.

Description
This corpus is split into two parts. The first, the Honolulu Corpus of Written Yapese, was collected at the University of Hawai'i at MΔnoa in the spring of 2001. The source materials for the corpus come from various upper elementary school readers first published in the late seventies by the Yap State Education Department and later gathered together by PREL (Pacific Resources for Education and Learning) and published in 1999 as a CD-ROM entitled PALM (Pacific Area Learning Materials). These materials are available on the web at http://www.prel.org/PALM/index.asp. The Honolulu Corpus consists of four texts. Three of these (Thiliig Kaakaroom (A Long Ago Storm), Lβagruw i Maabgol (The Married Couple) and Beaq ni ba Moqon ngea ba Raan' i Moongkii (A Man and a Troop of Monkeys)) are fictional narratives. The fourth, Guwchiig (Dolphins), is an expository text which contains three short narratives. The corpus materials were translated by Stella Kolinski. Keira Gebbie Ballantyne prepared the interlinearized texts and edited the translations.
The second part of the corpus, the Colonia Corpus of Spoken Yapese, was collected in Yap in late 2002. It consists of three interviews. The first of these, Schooldays, is a short text in which Angela Y. Kenrad interviews Sherri Mannaβ about her experiences at a Yapese school in the 1950s. In Mβuw Nu Waβab (Canoes of Yap), Mr. Walter Chieng is interviewed by Angela Y. Kenrad on the subject of traditional Yapese canoes. The third interview, Dapael, concerns the traditional practices surrounding menarch and menstruation. The word dapael refers to the land and houses set aside for menstruating women and women at menarche. The interviewee in this case has requested that her name not be made public. The texts in the Colonia Corpus were transcribed and translated by Sherri Mannaβ and Angela Y. Kenrad. Keira Gebbie Ballantyne edited the translations and prepared the interlinearized version of the texts.
