Name PNG Peroveta Singers of Canberra
Description This collection was created from the PARADISEC Podcast Series β€œToksave Culture Talks” under Episodes 13 & 14 and directly relates to the Collection TCT1-13 & TCT1-14 about music of the Central Province of Papua New Guinea. The podcast episodes and full interviews with Deveni Temu can be found in the TCT1 collection. It features recordings of the PNG Peroveta Singers of Canberra made in 2023 by the PARADISEC team. This group was formed in 1999 by diaspora community members in the ACT and since then they have performed at events such as the National Folk festival, as well as meeting regularly at the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Hackett, not only to learn and sing Peroveta songs, but also share Papua New Guinean culture, language and music. The Sene traditional Papuan song and dance and Peroveta β€œprophet” singing introduced by the LMS South Sea islander missionaries from Cook Islands in late 19th century. The Canberra group responds to recordings at PARADISEC archive in MG1 & IC1 collections and performances are in various languages namely Hiri Motu, Hula, Keapara (Aroma, Keakalo), Mailu from around the Port Moresby area mainly Hanuabada village in the National Capital District along the southeast Motuan coastal villages and further towards the Rigo and Abau districts of Central Province. The songs also include the southeastern Pacific of the Cook Islands Māori or Rarotongan songs. The music recordings both from the history and culture of PNG Peroveta singing that stretches from the 1950s’ to the present day and embraced by the PNG diaspora show the enduring popularity across decades as singing styles and a genre popular and practiced by the people of Central Province, PNG.

Description

This Sene Lokoru song was sung during the festive times of the return of the Hiri expeditions. It was a great time of enormous joy because not only did the Hiri sailors bring back food and material goods and buatau and mats and all kinds of things from the Gulf district but they also came back alive. And it was a terribly traumatic and stressful several months when these sailors would go sail all the way up the Gulf and stay there and collect their goods and wait for the correct trade winds to bring them back. And after a few months they would turn back, return, and there'd be great celebration. The ladies would jump on board the lagatoi and sway their hips. They would sing funny nonsense songs just for sheer joy. Lokoru is about a girl who, the humour is, she serves her mother some food and she breaks wind in the process. And she serves her father some food and she breaks wind in the process and they are encouraging her to walk around with her breasts waving around. It's all for fun, good fun. "Hey Lokoru, when you served food to your mum, you walked and farted; when you served food to your dad, you walked and bum-bugled. Lokoru is a women's nonsense song of hilarity for lakatoi festivities and the the Idiomatic translation are " Hey Lokoru, walk around Vai and walk around Kabua with your boobs flopping about!" (Tommy Dietz, January 2023) Song Lyrics: Lokoru e, Lokoru e Sinamu ana oa heni, orakasidi-rakasidi Tamamu ana oa heni, orakabu-rakabu Lokoru e, Vai madai o Lokoru e, Kabua madai o Ratarata-geugeu no! Lokoru e, Lokoru e Sinamu ana oa heni, orakasidi-rakasidi Tamamu ana oa heni, orakabu-rakabu Lokoru e, Vai madai o Lokoru e, Kabua madai o Ratarata-geugeu no! Description

Peroveta Motu Christmas Song - Ia Baineme Torea. There are two vocal parts in Peroveta singing. The parts that the women sing is called Pere and the parts that the men sing is Maru. So Pere is the most important and with Pere there is a woman who begins it and that the most important because she sets the tone on how the singing is going to go. In this group Hane Dietz known as Biaguna, leads the singing or the descant for the singing. It is known as Perepere in Rarotongan, Cook Islands and in Hula it is known as Verage which literally means you climb. The example is in the song Sivarai Namo where Wari Powell was doing the Perepere or the climbing part. The song is about the time of census in the bible in the Christmas at the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ making reference to Maria that's Mary and the words mamoe ireguna about the shepherds out in the field and an angel appeared to them. Song Lyrics. la baineme torea Maria danu ia ena he ... Maria danu ia ena maoheni Vada eme rogorogo la baineme torea Maria danu ia ena he ... Description

Divara Ena Tau Ta is in the Motu language and one of the historical Peroveta songs saying that they pay homage to those south sea island missionaries that came to Papua New Guinea to bring the gospel and especially from islands of the Cook Islands. This song is paying homage or acknowledging that Ruatoka was the leading south sea island missionary that was brought by the LMS London Mission Society from 1871 coming from the Loyalty Islands over to the Torres Strait and to Hanuabada village. Rautoka was in Hanuabada village teaching the Hanuabada villagers how to sing these wonderful songs so Divara Ena Tau ta says this is a man of God named Ruatoka. Song Lyrics: Iesu Keriso e vara herevana bunai la bunai la Davida natuna mai Aberahamo Iesu Keriso e vara herevana bunai la bunai la Davida natuna mai Aberahamo I-I-e lesu lesu la una ... Description

This song, Seora Gana Egi is in Magi language of Mailu. Mailu Island is a small island with an history in 1606 where Spanish sailors were blown off course and they ended up on the island. In the process they kidnapped kids and brought them to the Philippines and now a reconciliation of those people happened in 2012. The singing style is unusual in that it is led by the Maru, or the men who begin this rather than Pere (women). The words sung in the song relate to Paulo apositolo meaning Paul the apostle. Description

This is a Second World War Lament song in Motu language. The song Bese Veridia has meaning to all families and it's about family. It was written in World War two by Morea Morea when the people of Hanuabada village were evacuated to Malara. When they settled there waiting to return to their homes they lamented the fact that they were separated from their homes and had no idea when they would ever return. So this song was then composed about the time they would return when they would return because they're like birds flying around aimlessly with nowhere to land. The diaspora community takes this song very much to their hearts because we like the Hanuabda villages at that time, it applies to all those who have left their homelands and are also like birds flying around around the globe and don't know when they'll ever return so it's very meaningful for all Central people across the globe. (Tommy Dietz,February 2023) Song Lyrics: Bese veridia olalomai e Iura henimai toana me itaia e Ma lalomai oa hisi-a hisianina e Aina aroholoamu manu na heheto Emai rohokau gabuna Malara binai Ma loumai ina tahemoale-moale heboumu Lau so manu do na roholoamu? Eda hanuai do asina roho diho Eda dubu lalonai do asina vareai O Motu hanua-i Edena negai bama vareai? Lau so manu do na roholoamu? Eda hanuai do asina roho diho Eda dubu lalonai do asina vareai O Motu hanua-i Edena negai bama vareai? Tanikiu bada herea (Deveni Temu and Peroveta Singers Canberra, February 2023)
