NameThe Eskaya Digital Archive
DescriptionThis is a repository of materials related to the Eskaya community of Bohol with particular reference to the Eskayan language. Most of the materials were recorded, filmed, scanned or photographed by Piers Kelly between 2005 and 2011. Exceptions are the oral history recordings of Zoë Bedford made in 2003-2004. Important postgraduate work from Cristina Martinez-Juan from the 1990s was added later. It is at PK2-50. The Eskayan language was assigned the ISO639-3 code [esy] in 2014 however this change has not yet been reflected in the PARADISEC Ethnologue list. For the time being, the collection is labelled 'Cebuano'. File-naming conventions for media types: AV - Audiovisual DISS – Dissertations and other postgraduate research GOV – Government documents MAN – Manuscript MED – News media PUB – Publications PIX – photographs File-naming conventions for locations: BAL – Balingasao, Valencia (9.64083 N, 124.221 E) BIAB – Biabas, Guindulman ( 9°48'20.52"N, 124°24'13.92"E) CAD – Cadapdapan, Candijay (9°49'30.18"N, 124°25'31.92"E) SIER – Poblacion Sierra Bullones (?) TAG – Tagbilaran, Bohol (?) TAY – Taytay, Duero (9°45'37.56"N, 124°21'12.72"E) Those with questions about the archive can contact Piers Kelly (Firstname dot Lastname at gmail dot com). The Eskaya Digital Archive contains the following types of digitised materials related to Eskaya history, culture and language: • Manuscripts (handwritten Eskaya documents) • Publications (peer-reviewed commentaries) • Dissertations (postgraduate research) • Media (newspaper and magazine articles) • Grey literature (various unpublished letters and commentaries) • Genealogies (gedcom text files and photographs of surviving parish records) • Pictures (people and scenes from Eskaya villages, not including photographs of manuscripts) • Audio and video recordings (Eskaya people speaking, singing or writing Eskayan) For an introduction to Eskaya history, culture and language see my dissertation at PK2-07-DISS09. This document also summarises and evaluates earlier commentaries on the Eskayan language (as compiled in PK2-09-MED) and explains the context in which the materials in The Eskaya Digital Archive were collected. Those who are visiting this archive for the first time might have trouble isolating the richest and rarest materials. The following 'jewels in the crown' are recommended for new visitors: • PK2-03-MANBIAB06: a rare phrasebook • PK2-03-MANBIAB08: Interesting auto-ethnography with elements that may be considered unorthodox today • PK2-03-MANBIAB12: the Castañares Manuscript (housed in Bohol Provincial Museum, probably created in Biabas then brought to Taytay) • PK2-04-MANCAD05: The famous notebook of Eleuteria Faustina Viscayda which represents her attempt to standardise Eskaya literature. She was the longest surviving scribe of Mariano Datahan and died in 2009. • PK2-09-MED05: Brenda Abregana's letter to editor of Who • PK2-09-MED08: Brenda Abregana's 1985 letter to Governor Butalid • PK2-10-MISC01: Juan Datahan's USAFFE orders PK2-13-PIXBIAB01: USAFFE orders PK2-13-PIXBIAB03: Picture of Mariano Datahan PK2-13-PIXBIAB13: Church photo 1 PK2-13-PIXBIAB21: Church photo 2 (Flores de Mayo) PK2-13-PIXBIAB76: national anthem flag school PK2-14-PIXCAD10: Group photo of Cadapdapan teachers PK2-14-PIXCAD19: child and bird PK2-16-PIXTAY44: kids in front of sign PK2-16-PIXTAY79: adults and kids class Taytay PK2-15-PIXTAG01: Sandugo -Naning speech Problems to address in the Eskaya Digital Archive: Repetitions: USAFFE orders, Cayo Lusica certificate Repetitions: PK2-42-AVTAY21 and PK2-42-AVTAY36 are identical (and others, see finder list) Repetitions: PK2-21-AVBIAB31 and PK2-25-AVCAD09 are identical (sort out whether it is really in cadapdapan or Biabas)

Description

These are .txt files prepared in Toolbox. They represent an unfinished dictionary of around 3000 headwords sourced from various wordlists and unfinished interlinearisation of Eskaya literary texts. For the most part this is Piers Kelly's analysis of the Viscayda Manuscript at PK2-04-MANCAD05 so you should download this one too for comparison. Piers tried to be reasonably systematic on some stories but in the end he gave more attention to aspects of the text that illustrated the particular grammatical features of Eskayan and Visayan that he was interested in. There are also embedded notes to colleagues and speakers that he was unable to resolve during fieldwork (and not being a native speaker of Visayan his own translations might be questionable sometimes). 'Kins' refers to Alma E Aparece and 'Nida' refers to Decena Nida Palma Salingay. The codes are derived from standard Toolbox codes in use at the time of the analysis: \id =ID (the identifying name of the story in English) \idv= ID vernacular (the identifying name of the story in Eskayan) \idn = ID national (the identifying name of the text in Visayan) \sp = speaker \ref = short reference \txv = text in vernacular (Eskayan) \txn = text in national language (Visayan) \mb = morpheme breaks \ge = gloss in English \ps = part of speech \ft = free translation Note that a phonemic spelling of Visayan text is used (based on John U. Wolff's orthography) so that the text is more easily searchable and comparable to the Eskayan layer. That means, in brief, that 'i' replaces 'e' and 'u' replaces 'o'. and 'syun' replaces 'cion' etc

Description

These documents were photographed or scanned in Biabas with the assistance of Juan Datahan (with the exception of PK2-03-MANBIAB12 which was photographed in Tagbilaran). Many of the texts had been brought to Juan from others in the village for the purposes of being digitised but their scribes were not identified. PK2-03-MANBIAB01: A transcript of PK2-03-MANBIAB02 (transcribed by Piers Kelly in 2011) PK2-03-MANBIAB02: A rare romanised wordlist written by Sisinia Datahan Peligro(photographed in 2011) PK2-03-MANBIAB03: Notebook belonging to Rustica Palma (photographed in 2011). Some the pages are poorly reproduced due to fading daylight and fading camera batteries. Digital pages 19-41 are the biography of Mariano Datahan, with Eskayan on left pages and Visayan on right pages. PK2-03-MANBIAB04: Eskaya flags with embroidered text (photographed June 2006) PK2-03-MANBIAB05: Notebook in possession of Juan Datahan including the Simplet, Nuku Tumaw and other texts (photographed June 2006) PK2-03-MANBIAB06: a phrasebook and dictionary including English sentences in the possession of Juan Datahan (scribe unknown, photographed June 2006) PK2-03-MANBIAB07: a notebook (photographed June 2006, scribe unknown) PK2-03-MANBIAB08: a notebook of various texts (photographed June 2006, scribe unknown) PK2-03-MANBIAB09: the expository text Atikisis (photographed July 2006, scribe unknown) PK2-03-MANBIAB10: another example of Atikisis (photographed July 2006, scribe unknown) PK2-03-MANBIAB11: unknown text (photographed July 2006, scribe unknown) PK2-03-MANBIAB12: the Castañares Manuscript housed in Bohol Provincial Museum, probably handwritten in Biabas then brought to Taytay (photographed 19 April 2006; for more information see http://bravenewwords.info/2014/12/06/depositors-diary-the-castanares-manuscript/)

Description

This is a dataset collected between 2006 and 2011, largely from NCIP genealogies, but also parish records. It includes 1704 individuals. PK-11-GEN01.ged: A gedcom file containing multiple records of individuals living in Eskaya villages today, and their ancestors. Information is based primarily on genealogy form submitted to the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples in Tagbilaran, but also from parish records and personal interviews. PK2-11-GEN02.pdf and PK2-11-GEN-03.pdf contain 497 images of parish burial records from the Biabas church, photographed in 2008. Page 3 of PK2-11-GEN-03.pdf shows the record of Mariano Datahan's burial. PK2-11-GEN04: Photographed records from the Loon church Nuestra Señora de la Luz. They are not complete. Pages photographed are those which include names of large Eskaya family clans such as Sumatra and Castañares. The original records may have been destroyed in the Bohol earthquake of 15 October 2013. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR FAMILY HISTORY RESEARCHERS: This dataset was uploaded to familysearch.org on 5 June 2017 by Piers Kelly. It is now part of the Pedigree Resource File in this archive. If you wish to find out about your ancestors, your best option is to access the information online (rather than via the .txt file in PARADISEC) since you will be able to improve it with a community of other family-history researchers. The PARADISEC file is static. In other words, nothing will be added or removed or revised. The familysearch.org archive will not make public any records of people who are still living. For this reason, only 54 of the 1704 records are now public on the site. Thus, for deceased ancestors it is best to refer to familysearch.org, and for living relatives, use the .txt file deposited here.

C. Argamo, 3rd Lieut. Infantry Commanding. Official: Galo S. Sjulga 3rd Lieut. Infantry Executive Officer. PK2-13-PIXBIAB02: Photograph of Mariano Datahan. Date is unknown but it looks as if it were taken prior to the photograph dated 1948. A version of this photograph was in the possession of Benjie Ayuban Esquilla. This one was found on the web through a reverse image search on 26 November 2014. PK2-13-PIXBIAB03: Scanned by Piers Kelly on 28 June 2010. Photo supplied by Juan Datahan from his collection. Caption reads “Mariano Datahan the famous Supreme leader of Biabas barrio, Contacted by Rev. E. Sabandal and his GCA party on Sept. 17, 1948. A.T.V [or A.J.V]”. Description

Rustica Palma leading childrens Eskaya class and xx leading adults class. The song at the beginning is Muryun Pilipayin and xx [check photo metadata] leading adults class. From PK2-21-AVBIAB04 onwards, the camera and audio focus is on the adults class only. Audio for this event is also recorded separately. PK2-21-AVBIAB06 has funny example sentence referring to Piers Kelly, ‘Nganong naca lapoklapok ca man?’ Esk: Nado yan moy gamergamerdo cos yan’. Why are you so muddy? Reply: ‘Cay dacu ug ulan sa Taytay’ Esk: Ditso cos gowago nostra dil ya Taytay’. Because it was raining so heavily in Taytay. This begins at minute 13. The wav files were recorded with a secondary device of the same event. Time alignment may be retrieved by watching and listening for clap.
