This data on the location of convict sites in Australia has been collected by the Mapping Convict Landscapes project, which is part of the 'Landscapes of Production and Punishment' project, run out of University of New England. The aim of the project is to reconsider the structure and operation of the convict system through the lens of its industrial productivity. It looks at the ways in which convict sites and associated administrative structures worked as part of the larger project of invasion and colonization,  how different sites were linked through chains of production, and how goods and people moved about the landscape. 

The project is ongoing and although we have nominated CC by Attribution, we ask that people contact us before using the data. Sources of any quotations and other data derived form other sources and used here in the description and location fields is acknowledged in the full dataset, available via UNE's RUNE data repository.
