Ketan Sabaro on the Seven Rules of the Sompeng and the Origins of Maɽir Religion

Description

The Sora Sompeng (Matarbənum) temple script was created by Mangai Gomango (aka "The Pure One") in 1936 as a core part of the local Maɽir religion, now practiced by Sarda Sor speakers. In the first oral text, Ketan Sabaro describes the seven rules of this religion, which include the use of the script, vegetariansim, sobriety, and prescriptions related to hygiene, temple worship on Thursdays and other spiritual behavior. In a second oral text, Mr. Sabaro lists the names of Mangai Gomango's first disciples, where they originated from and how they contributed to the advancement of the Sompeng script alongside the Maɽir religion. He estimates that the writing system is now used in 225 Sora villages across Andhra Pradesh and Odisha State. Mr. Sabaro occasionally code-switches from Sora into Oriya, a regionally dominant language. Recorded by Opino Gomango. Glossed and translated by Gregory D. S. Anderson.

Description

Elicited by Sora linguist Opino Gomango, this in-depth grammar collection includes 2401 Sora phrases recorded by Lanjia-Sor speaker and cultural expert Srinivas Gomango (each audio file in this item contains between 40 and 50 elicited phrases, and all linguistic data and analysis is included here). We elicited transitive and instransitive verbs, negative and positive verbs, noun phrases of varying sizes with various different modifiers, simple sentences with direct and indirect objects, complex sentences (with relative, conditional, complement and adverbial subordinate clauses), participle and converb clauses, imperatives and prohibitives, interrogatives and others. This content was annotated, glossed and translated by Gregory D. S. Anderson. It is made available in this collection with ELAN annotation files that correlate with audio recordings.

Description

Sora cultural expert Srinivas Gomango speaks on various important topics in nine oral texts in his dialect, Lanjia-Sor. He covers a wide range of traditional knowledge domains, local celebrations and healing practices of the Sora recorded by Opino Gomango. Traditions are described in detail; many include animal sacrifices alongside the worship of deities specific to Sora spiritual beliefs. These texts are: Rogon Abdur (the red gram harvest festival), Daramapur (the worship of the Darama Spirit to restore good health and harvest), Kaniboisumpur (the worship of Epilepsy Spirit Woman), Gelbidsum (Braided Feather Spirit, aka Grandmother Smallpox Spirit), Lurnisum (a spirit that resides in a small house near Sora villages), Durisumpur (worship of the Duri Spirit that heals sick people), Etangjonma (Cut-Cow Eater Woman, a spirit who heals variola and who is only appeased by cow sacrifice), Kinaloboipur (Tiger Earth Woman Ceremony, a ritual to deal with those who have been killed by a tiger) and Mordisum (Cholera Spirit).
