Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there was a murky lake. It was never dry even in summer and rainy seasons. There were many things that people could eat from that lake. And there was a turtle family there. One day, the young turtle felt like he was already grown-up. And he didn't want to stay in that lake anymore. He said to his mother, "Mom, I don't want to stay in this dirty lake. I would like to spend my life in the clean water." His parents said, "No. Don't go anywhere. Stay here with us. Although this lake is dirty, there is always water even in summer. The water will be dried up in summer in the place where the water is clean. Then you will get into trouble." But he said, "No, I will move to another place no matter what you said." Then he went out of his home. He met the fish on his way. They said, "Mr Turtle, don't wander around. Then you will face trouble one day. Don't go anywhere." But the turtle didn't listen to the fish. He kept going, and then he saw a big beautiful lake. He stayed there. Then it was going to be summer soon. The water was slowly drying up. When the cowherds went past that lake, they saw him. And they said, "Ohh, there is a turtle in the lake. Let's catch and eat it!" The cowherds said those words every day. Then he felt afraid. One day, he climbed out of the water onto land and shouted, "Help me! Help me!" The two egrets heard him shouting. Then one egret asked another one, "How shall we do? Shall we help him? If we don't rescue him, he will die." Another egret said, "Then how shall we do? Let's help him if you agree." Then they landed on land and said to the turtle, "You don't speak a bit, okay? Don't open your mouth too. We will rescue you. You just have to bite this branch." The turtle said, "Okay, I will." Then the two egrets carried him and flew up in the sky. The cowsheds saw that the turtle and two egrets were flying up in the sky. They said to each other, "Hey, look at that. The two birds are carrying that turtle which we have planned to catch and eat. The turtle is escaping from here." When the turtle heard what they said, he dissatisfied that and thought, "I can't be killed easily! I am free now." As he thought, he opened his mouth to say that. When he opened his mouth, he fell from the sky and died. Then he was killed by the cowherds and became the meal for them. Transcription (Lu Hkawng) Moi shawng de da grai hka nawng grai hkanu ai da.
