Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) Once upon a time, there were two merchants in a village. One merchant went to the other place to trade goods. When he came back home, it was already dark. So, he had to sleep somewhere in the forest. He put his clothes under a big tree. And he thought, "It's not good for me to sleep on the ground because of the beasts. I should sleep on the tree." He put his clothes under the tree where he slept. Around midnight, a group of robbers arrived there. They took a rest under the tree where the merchant was sleeping and were dividing the gold equally. While they were dividing the gold, they fought each other. The robbers were fighting against each other. And they were running away. But they took a pack of clothes instead of a pack of gold. The gold was under the tree. The merchant climbed down the tree the next morning. He took the pack and went back home. He thought it was his cloth. When he arrived home, his wife unpacked it. She told him, "You brings a lot of gold home!" "No, they are my clothes," said he while walking towards her. They saw a lot of gold there. He remembered the robbers came the place where he slept last night and were fighting against each other. He knew that the robbers might take his pack of clothes instead of gold. Since then, they became rich. Another merchant was jealous of him. He asked him, "How did you get rich?" The first man said, "It is like this. I slept there and got the gold in the morning." He told him everything without leaving any fact. Then, the second merchant went to the place where the first man went. He came back late like him too. And he slept at the same place where the first man slept. He put his belonging under the tree too. At night, a group of robbers came there. The leader said, "We took a wrap of clothes instead of our gold last time. Let's be careful this time." When they left, they took his clothes and left a wrap stones and soil there. They left it and walked away. The next morning, the man climbed down the tree to go back home. He saw the pack under the tree. He thought, "This might be gold," and took it home. When he arrived home, he unpacked it happily. But there was nothing valuable. There were only stones and soil inside it. He got angry and went to the first man. And he told him angrily, "You lied to me!" The first man said, "I didn't. I told you the truth. I just said everything that happened to me." Since the second man was greedy and jealous, he didn't get any gold like the first man. Transcription (La Ring) Moi kalang mi hta da ndai kahtawng langai kaw hpaga ga sha ai la lahkawng nga ai da.
