Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) The story I'm going to tell is about a smart and clever girl called Kaw Hpraw and a naughty girl called Kaw Chyang. Once upon a time, there were two Grade 2 students in a village. A girl called Kaw Hpraw was obedient, clever, smart and loveable. She loved other people and was a kind of girl who shared what she had. And there was another girl called Kaw Chyang. She was naughty, disobedient and spoiled. One day, an old lady came towards them while they were drinking water from a well. The old lady requested, "Give me some drinking water, please. I'm thirsty." Kaw Hpraw said, "Okay. Wait a minute, grandma." She carried some water from the well and put it on the banana leaf. And she gave that water to the old woman politely. The old woman blessed upon her, "Thank you, kid. Whenever you laugh, there will be gold coming out of your mouth." Kaw Hpraw said, "Thank you very much for your blessing." But Kaw Chyang said, "Grandma, you're old enough. Carry the water by yourself if you want to drink." The old lady said to Kaw Chyang, "Whenever you laugh, a small frog will come out from your mouth." Actually, the old lady was a deity. After blessing upon them, the old lady walked away. Many years later, they two became grown-up women. Kaw Hpraw became a teacher. She got married to her lover. On her wedding day, when she laughed, there were gold coming out of her mouth. She picked all the gold and became rich. Kaw Chyang got married too. But when she laughed on her wedding day, there were only small frogs coming out of her mouth. The groom was frightened and said, "What kind of woman are you? I'm scared. I can't marry you." He ran away from her. So, she had to live alone forever. Transcription (Lu Awng) Ya hkai na maumwi gaw myitsu ai kaw hpraw hte myit nsu ai kaw chyang a lam re.
