Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This story is about a crook and an upright man. Once upon a time, there were Nhkang Gam and Mu Tu in a village. One day, they went out to buy some salt. At that time, Nhkang Gam said, "My friend, being upright is good on this earth." Mu Tu said, "No, being crooked is better." They didn't agree with each other. They said, "Then, let's go and ask other people about this." They made a promise that a liar's eyes would be plucked out. On their way, they met a thatcher. They asked him, "My friend, can you tell us which is better: being crooked or being upright?" He said, "Since I am a thatcher, I need a sickle to cut the thatch. So, I think being crooked is better." Then, Mu Tu tried to pluck out Nhkang Gam's eyes as they promised. Nhkang Gam begged him to show mercy. Nhkang Gam said, "Let's ask another person too." Then, they kept walking and met a farmer. They asked him the same question. He said, "I can do farming with this rake. So, I think being crooked is better." Mu Tu tried to pluck Nhkang Gam's eyes out again. Nhkang Gam begged him again not to pluck his eyes out yet. Then, they kept finding another person. At that time, they met a fisherman. The fisherman said, "My net is crooked. So, I think being crooked is better." Then, Mu Tu tried to pluck out Nhkang Gam's eyes for real. Suddenly, a tiger roared and jumped out in front of them. They were frightened and ran away. Mu Tu ran in a zigzag, and Nhkang Gam ran straight. The tiger couldn't catch Nhkang Gam. So it caught Mu Tu and killed him. Nhkang Gam could escape from the tiger. And he bought some salt and went back home. He thought to himself, "I survive because I think being upright is good. Mu Tu is dead now because he thought being crooked is better." "I will live my life in an honest and upright way start from today," he promised to himself. Transcription (La Ring) Myit magaw ai wa hte myit malang ai wa na lam.
