Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is about treating our parents well before they die. In the past, there was a famine in the place where we lived. There was a shortage of food. The old grandmother took her grandson to the forest to find some yams. Yams were deep inside the ground. While she was digging the soil to get the yam, she told her grandson to light the fire and bake the yam. As her grandson was starving, she gave him the yam that she got. Then he baked it and ate it. Meanwhile, the grandmother kept finding the yam without taking a rest. He told her, "Granny, I am hungry." Then she gave him what she got. Later, the grandmother was exhausted and hungry too. She asked him, "What about yams? Are they baked well?" He said, "I ate them all." She didn't say anything and felt pleased if he was full. She thought, "It might be difficult for us if we don't have any food to eat later." Then she dug the soil again to find yams. But she passed out because of tiredness and died inside the hole she was digging. The grandson didn't know that she was dead. He was just baking the yam that his grandmother gave him and eating it peacefully. He told her, "Grandma, I am still hungry." But she couldn't reply to him anymore. The yam he was baking last was cooked at that time. He said, "Grandma, get up. The yam is well cooked. Come and eat." The grandmother was dead because of tiredness. The grandmother couldn't eat the yam anymore because she was already dead. If you didn't treat your parents well when they were alive, you might regret it. So we have to treat them well when they are alive. This is the end of the story.
