Description

Translation (by Rita Seng Mai) This event actually happened between 1950 and 1960. One mother who carried her baby on back went down Danai road (Danai is a town in Kachin State) by her bicycle. She passed Dumbang village. When she arrived at Mayan village near Manpang village, she heard hooting sound from the mountain on her right side. Actually, that hooting sound was made by Sanam Num (it's a kind of Nat, evil spirit which has got long hair and terrible face). She was thinking hard who made that hooting sound "oh...woooo...." So she looked around, but she couldn't see anyone. Then she heard the hooting sound 3 more times. As soon as she heard that sound, she immediately sped up riding her bicycle and pinched her baby to cry out loud because she knew it wasn't normal. When she neared Manpang village, Sanam Num could catch up with them. Then Sanam Num approached the baby. Sanam Num touched, grabbed, and snatched the baby. So, that mother left her baby there and ran away. This is the real event which took place. Transcription (by Lu Awng) Moi 50 jan 60 dai lapran ten kaw kaja wa byin ai mabyin hku rai nga.
