Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is about the Jinghpaw culture used in marriage. There are many things we do at weddings. When a new daughter-in-law comes into her husband's house, the mother-in-law let her sit on a chair. The housewife of this whole family sits there because she will be the one who has to take care of the family. The husband's mother sits on that chair at first. If she gets a daughter-in-law, that daughter-in-law has to sit there as a means of transferring responsibility. The husband's family let the new daughter-in-law sit there. Her parent-in-law said to her, "A new wife has to act politely. You will be the one who has to take care of the family now." There was a kind of omen. They brought a brooder and put it on the new daughter-in-law's head. And they made the brooder fly up. Some brooders went to their eggs and brooded them. But some brooders just went somewhere else. People assumed that the new wife would lead the household well if a brooder on the new wife's head went back to its eggs. If the brooder went somewhere else, they assumed, "She can't be a good mother. She will get another man." The elders said to her, "This hen tries her best to hatch her eggs. She gives warmth to her eggs with her feathers and heart. She doesn't care although she is hot. Since today, you are the mother of this family. You have to take care of your husband and children. You need to raise them to be smart and good. You have to act like this brooder that takes good care of its babies." The next morning, there is chicken porridge which is cooked by a new wife. Or she can cook chicken and soft rice. And she wraps the rice with banana leaves. We usually give that porridge or soft rice to relatives. The new husband calls the relatives, "Come and enjoy the chicken porridge that my wife cooks." And the new wife shares it with everyone by herself, not by other people. She says, "This is the porridge I cook. Enjoy this." Then, the wedding is successfully completed. The purpose of cooking the porridge and sharing it with everyone is, "Since today, you will be the mother of this family. You have to lead the family well and have a good relationship with the relatives too." Our elders have taught the new wife how to be a good wife by doing this kind of thing. We know that is important. But now, we worship our Mighty GOD. Since we are religious, we don't use that kind of method nowadays.
