Description

Translation (Seng Pan) We, Kachin people, have held naming ceremony from the time of our ancestors to till now. In naming ceremony, we name the newly born baby by pounding ginger and dried fish. We accept that fish's eyes are the most beautiful in the world. They are so bright and shiny. That's why we use dried fish in naming ceremony because we believe that using fish will bless the baby with beauty. And we also use ginger with the intension of having more babies like it has many nodes. Moreover, we use sticky rice to stick together more than ever. For those reasons, Kachin people have traditionally used sticky rice, ginger and dried fish in naming ceremony.
