Description

Translation (Rita Seng Mai) This is the story which parents usually tell their children. This is the story which my father told me. The story is about how and why the pig's crying sound came out while eating. Once upon a time, there was a farm owner in a village. He also had got a hen and a pig. They all lived together. In the past, the pig and the dog could eat together with humans on one table. They had the permit to eat together with humans. The dog and the pig always quarrelled at the dining table. The owner was so angry since they both always fought. Then he told them that he would order them to do something. And he continued, "The one which can finish its work could eat with me, and the one which finishes its work late couldn't eat with me. And that one has to stay outside the house, and it has to eat only leftovers." Then he ordered the pig and the dog to plough the field. Then the pig really worked hard because it wanted to eat food together with its owner. But the dog was sleeping while the pig was working hard. So the pig asked the dog, "My friend, why don't you do the work? Why are you sleeping there without working? Don't you feel afraid of not getting a chance to eat together with our owner?" The dog said, "I will do after I have enough rest." But the pig had already done its work while the dog was sleeping under the tree. Then the pig went back home happily and told its master about that the dog was sleeping under the tree without working. At that time, the dog got up and put its footprints on the ground where the pig had worked. Then it went back home too. When the dog arrived home, the pig was informing the owner that the dog was so lazy to work. Then the dog said, "My master, you will see whether I work or not when you go to the field. Let's see who is lying; the pig or me?" Their owner didn't believe it, so he went to the field to check. He saw that there were only the dog's footprints. He was angry and went back home. And he beat the pig up for lying him. He told the pig, "You don't have any permission to eat together with human anymore. You have to eat only leftovers of us." Then, he drove the pig away. Since that day, the pig couldn't eat or sleep together with humans. It had to stay outside the house. Our elders say that the pig is making a loud noise while eating food because of that.
