<styleUrl>#TLCMapStyle</styleUrl>

This is a personal narration about a hunting expedition, in which the speaker shot a barking deer somewhere near the mountain behind Riga village. He describes how the deer died immediately on the spot where it was shot. Then, on the way back to the village, he saw a civet and tried to shoot it. He explains how he missed the civet since he was trying to shoot it without actually removing the deer that he was carrying from his shoulder. As he reached his house, seeing the deer, the elders of the village suggested convening a yektup doye ceremony. This was followed by a baŋgo beenam performed by children in the village male dormitory. The head of the deer was presented to an old man from the speaker's close kin. Since the deer was not very large, its meat was only distributed to a few close kin. The next day, the old man brought back the skull of the deer together with some pieces of meat and a pot of rice. It is explained that the event of shooting an animal such as a deer is followed by rituals and also a taboo period for the hunter. The hunter cannot eat anything that comes from his own house. This is why the old man brought food for the hunter. This is followed by a day known as madək, where the hunter will go hunting for a second time in order to remove the taboo. This time he didn't shoot anything.

      <styleUrl>#TLCMapStyle</styleUrl>

In this text, Talup Mɨɨze describes the traditional relations between Minyong of Riga village with other neighbouring tribes. Since this involves discussion of trade relations, the discussion segues into discussions of earlier trade items and their origin, etc. He first focuses on trade with members of the Bori tribe, another Tani tribe whose traders used to come to Riga village to trade in Tibetan goods such as salt and woollen coats. In this context, he recollects his memories of witnessing the plight of Tibetan refugees who migrated down towards the Assam plains following the Chinese assault on their country. He mentions a person called Dondu Lama (possibly the Dalai Lama?) as one of their leaders. This is followed by a discussion of the traditional Minyong skills of earthenware pot-making in two villages nearby to Riga, Paale and Paaroŋ. He also discusses traditional practices of iron ore smelting: the raw materials were collected from discarded pieces of iron and other metals, and were melted down using a bamboo bellows to make jeme and duudap ornaments. Beeswax was used to mold the desirable shapes. He then mentions members of the Idu tribe, whom he calls Midi, coming to Riga to trade in woollen coats. He next mentions the Milang, whom he calls Olon, coming down occasionally to supply arrow poison to Riga village. Karko tribespeople, another Tani group who are settled very nearby to Riga village, also used to come to trade fermented soybeans.

Walking around the hillside fields, Tamor Mize demonstrates how to shoot squirrels and other tree-dwelling rodents with an arrow. Following this he explains about tabum 'var. of bamboo', which is grown in the Riga area nowadays and used for a variety of purposes. He explains that tabum is not native to the Riga area and must have probably come from the plains or from Pəŋgu (Pasighat). Here he also explains about different parts of deadfall traps and introduces the terms to describe them in Riga.

A wide-ranging conversation, beginning with a discussion about multiple-cropping in hillside cultivation. This conversation is interrupted by some birds singing nearby. Tamor Mize then goes on to discuss these birds, called pəku-pəruk, who are said to stay in groups of around 10 to 20 members, and which have white feathers on their heads. This is followed by an explanation of the difference between rɨgbi 'fallow field' and rɨgbɨn 'field under cultivation'. The speaker explains further that sometimes it takes ten years for a field left fallow to become ready for cultivation again. He explains how certain trees, such as taan 'unknown tree variety' helps one to distinguish fertile soil from infertile soil. This conversation is followed by a discussion of taatar mushrooms, and Tamor gives some names of edible and inedible mushrooms which are found in the Riga area. This is next followed by a discussion about an early British settlement, which was apparently situation exactly in the spot where the speaker was standing. He shows some pits which were reportedly dug by British soldiers to serve as septic tanks. He also mentions a British officer ɨɨlen, probably Williams, who was killed by a man from Komsing village. He points out an area which is cultivated as a field today, and which was used as a British camp called maŋaŋ keem 'Mangang Camp' in the years before Indian independence.

This is a video recording introducing the hobat, a type of bovine which results from the interbreeding of domestic cattle and mithuns. Tamor Mize describes how a hobat looks different from both cows and mithuns, particularly in terms of their horns. Hobat are usually black in colour, with horns more like a mithun than like a cow, except smaller. On being asked whether hobat share the cultural significance that Minyong accord to mithuns, Tamor Mize replies that hobat have the same status as mithun, which means that a hobat can be used for various types of ritual ceremonies or exchanges wherein cattle would not suffice. Hobat are also marked on the ear according to the clan of its owner, for identification, like mithuns.

This is a video taken during a wedding party that was happened upon. It isn't very useful for language, but has a certain cultural-documentary value. What is happening is a sort of reception ceremony at the house of the bride. The bride's maternal uncles wait for the groom's family processing near the bride's family house. One of the men is holding a piece of discarded garment attached to a pole, which will be burned upon the guests' arrival in order to drive away bad omen. One of the men standing describes this custom as gaɨn mɨya. In the entrance of the bride's house a branch of taan tree and a ŋɨdɨŋ 'spear' are erected in order to scare away spirits who might bring bad luck.

This recording was taken in Taduk Mize's house at his request, and showcases his personal demonstration of traditional Minyong life. The speakers are aware of the video recording, and are to a large extent acting for the camera. Nevertheless, there is a good amount of perfectly reliable cultural information discussed. The discussion begins with Taduk Mize demonstrating how ginger is grated using a dried stick of thorny cane keyɨɨ. The speaker announces that he is preparing for a long trip to the forest to look for young mithuns that have had their ears marked for identification. His wife helps him during his preparations. He explains why one shouldn't eat meat except for rodents and pork during this event. This topic is followed by another topic on earthen pots, which are still being used in Riga village. The design patterns on an earthen pot are called monmaŋ in Riga village. Again the speaker explains the need to mark mithuns on their ears for identification, now describing how it is done. The ear is cut in a pattern that varies from clan to clan. After the ear is cut, ginger is used as antiseptic and applied on the wound. In this event a piak ritual is performed, in which a leaf of əkkam 'Zingeberales spp.' is placed on the man's backpack. This is done as a sign to demonstrate ownership over the animal, as against the mountain spirits who had been the owners up to that point. This will be followed by ləŋot, wherein two bamboo poles are erected on the stairs of the house, crossing each other towards the top. Such rituals are performed for the prosperity of the mithuns, and also to ward against the mithuns' going savage and destroying crops.

This is a traditional Minyong story about əʔom 'fairie; non-human' and tanii 'the first man'. They are cast as two brothers, əʔom being named roobo and tani being named niibo. The two brothers were having trouble getting along, as ɲiibo would outwit roobo in any task they undertook. So, they set out to find out who was ultimately the more capable. The purpose of the story is to explain how and why it was that humans and spirits came to live apart from one another despite their intertwined existence, and also shows how human beings have a greater potential to master nature.

The two friends travel to the land of miti mita a mythological place in which food grains are considered to have originated. When they arrived at miti mita, the people of miti mita were very glad to see pəhɨ, but not bogum. The people considered pəhɨ very beautiful and charming. bogum was not very pleased with this reaction so he told the people of miti mita that pəhɨ is responsible for the destruction of crops, whereas he is not. Hearing this, the people of miti mita attacked pəhɨ. After the fracas, pəhɨ's face became deformed and pointed. pəhɨ got very angry at bogum and began to bite bogum's hand. As a result, bogum grasshoppers have tiny holes on their hands.

After the hillsides are cut and burned, seeds are sown. As the crops start to grow, the next activity is ambu bunam 'weeding'. According to the speaker, weeding is a very important part of growing crops. He compares this with əda ennam 'hunting with traps', since both of these activities require determination and persistence. This is where men can be divided into migam ('lucky and skilful men') and mibur ('unlucky and skill-less men'). Good weeding yields a good harvest.

This is a narration of a memorable hunting experience, in which the speaker Tano was attacked by a mother bear. Being unprepared for the attack, he was almost killed. By the time the bear gave up and left him it was already dark. Despite being unable to make a fire and not carrying a torch, Tano somehow managed to crawl back to his poyup (rest house near a field). After recounting this experience, Tano offers advice and suggestions to youngsters to be careful and be prepared when leaving for the mountains. It may be difficult to even get a drop of water sometimes, so one should carry at least a bottle of water, some matchboxes, and two torches. And if possible, one should never go alone to the mountains.

      <styleUrl>#TLCMapStyle</styleUrl>

This is a folktale about a young woman named kiinə hɨkkɨ mumdii and a man named ladaŋ joŋgo lɨoo. The speaker called this story a mɨɨho-ŋothonam, or an unpleasant story, by which he means that it recounts happenings that he wouldn't wish on anyone. It happened that kiinə hɨkki mumdii ate some food which was offered to her family from a lady named pondo nari, who had come to her house with a marriage proposal. The young girl ate the food without realizing that by taking the food she was accepting the marriage proposal of ladaŋ joŋgo lɨoo to become her own husband. Two or three years passed, but her husband never came to claim or visit her. One day she decided to go to the house of her in-laws. Such event is called milo dukkaŋ. When she arrived at her in-laws house, the in-laws told her that her husband had left for hunting and would not return for many days. She returned a second time, and was told the same again; however, this time she went inside the house and found a diminutive man with a large goitre lying near the fireplace. She realized that he in fact was ladaŋ joŋgo lɨoo, her husband. Seeing this she fled from the house and went to several places, including tako taləŋ ɲioo and kojum koje to look for someone who could perform a ɲamdum pɨnnam ('bride exchange'). But it turned out that everyone's efforts were somehow defeated by ladaŋ joŋgo lɨoo. Finally, kiinə hɨkhɨ mumdii returned to landaŋ joŋgo lɨoo, resigned to stay as his wife. One day she became pregnant, and her belly grew far beyond the normal size. When she finally gave birth, more than ten children came out, one after the other. Seeing this, the husband decided to mark each one on the ear in order to identify them. This was done by attaching a pakraŋ iron like a ring. However, there were not enough pakraŋ for all of the children, so that some of them did not get marked. These children became the lizards, snakes, chameleons and various other reptiles. The rest of the marked children went on to live as human beings.
