Made in Tais, in the evening in the house next to the community centre [background noise is generator and playback of video of welcome ceremony], with a large number of people present. Basically working through the first part of the Southern New Guinea project's 360 word list, with some grammatical digressions. See Nen2013 Field Notebook for details. English and Nen used as languages of elicitation; JN sometimes assists in explaining what is needed, as does Eniam (f), the schoolteacher at Tais.

This was the first phase of the welcome dance, held near the point where we enter the village.

Welcome dance leaves little yard area, and proceeds along the main way through the village, roughly eastwards. Unfortunately the battery ran out at this point, so I was unable to film the transition where we passed under a ritual gateway near the oval and community centre – at that point the traditional dancing ceased and on the far side of the ritual gateway were people singing Christian songs of welcome. Approaching the gateway the two very different musical styles mingled. Chris Healey managed to film this part on his camera so that segment is captured there.
